As you pass steam across a Face Centre Cubic metal, some of it is converted into helium and oxygen gases.  They cheapest FCC metal to use years aluminium.  Titanium is expensive, but the platinum metals are massively expensive.  Pt is more expensive than gold.

So your catalytic converter actually does molecular nuclear fusion.  Spitting out inert helium and free radical oxygen.

The free radical oxygen is so desperate for electrons, it will even bond with nitrous oxide.  To form the most toxic nitrous dioxide.

2 NO+O→NO₂

And the caused any an oxidise carbon fuel, will be oxidised.  So that he is the role of catalytic converters - to confer nitrous oxides to nitrous dioxide.  And complete a combustion of the fuel oil.

My father engineers have been having a laugh!  Using platinum metal.  More expensive weight for weight than gold.

We could use berilium, titanium, or my favour to aluminium.  Instead of needing 300 UK pounds a precious platinum metal, we can make do with crimped aluminium foil.  We have a massively greater area of the FCC metal.

So the aluminium will actually do a better job.  And cast below 20 UK pounds, by catalytic converter.  Compare and contrast with 500 UK pounds for a high level platinum catalytic converter.
